Prior to joining the J.F. Smith Group in 2017 as a feasibility study specialist, John served as director of development for Emporia State University’s Foundation for over five years. He retired at the end of 2016 after the successful conclusion of the university’s “Now and Forever” capital campaign that raised a new record for the university of $58 million. This record-setting comprehensive campaign, supported by the J. F. Smith Group, was completed ahead of schedule and $12 million over goal.  Prior to joining the foundation staff, John served as a lifetime trustee of the foundation for 30 years, and also served on the executive and finance committees. He has great passion for his university and all educational philanthropy.

John has participated in Leadership Kansas, Leadership Denver, and has served as a chief volunteer on multiple community not-for-profit organizations. A former player, John currently serves as an ambassador of retired Kansas City Chief players who provide community activism and financial support through the Chief’s organization. John also serves as a board member of a national nonprofit firm called Curriculum Leadership Institute, which provides K-12 curriculum consulting to public and private school districts.

John spent the majority of his career in the private and corporate sectors of financial services, commercial insurance, and medical equipment sales.
